Roger Thomas, the visionary hotel designer and Labrazel collaborator, has created a new standard of luxury for guests at the Bellagio and Wynn hotels. He’s the perfect person to give tips on designing a bathroom sanctuary – who wouldn’t want their bathroom to resemble a luxury hotel?
We asked him to share his tips on designing a luxurious bath space:
Master bathrooms have become both showpieces and pampering sanctuaries, a place where clients are often willing to splurge. Why do you think this space has become so important?
Years of visiting mineral springs, destination spas and the ever increasing pace of life have made restorative home sanctuary bathrooms desirable. They are seen not only as luxurious, but as healthful and can often act as a memory trigger of the design of a favorite exotic travel experience.
What are your 5 must-haves for a luxury master bathroom?
-
Lighting: Superb side lighting at lavatory and both high and low level lighting options for maintenance tasks or romantic retreat.
-
A super-efficient showerhead, preferably more than one, with spray quality adjustments.
-
Organization: Storage – A place for everything and everything in its place
-
Built in hidden equipment plug in storage. Hide the gack where it’s invisible but accessible.
-
A washlet commode and/or bidet.
What stays out on the countertop and what must be put away? Do you have a display or organizational go-to?
Beautiful caddies for tissue, lotions, soaps and those scent bottles designed to be both precious and present are on the countertops. All other labels and containers are stored in an easy access location.
Powder rooms can make an outsized impression on guests. They also give guests a rare opportunity to notice details without being observed. Does that affect your design choices for powder rooms?
Powder rooms should be elegant, dramatic and a bit over the top. They must also be intuitively functional and contain everything a guest needs to look and feel their best. I use more precious and surprising materials in powder rooms, but use my same strict lighting rules.
What’s the best way to create ambiance in a bathroom?
The best way to create ambiance in a bathroom is to banish all clutter and decorate with live orchids.
