This talented designer - and longtime Labrazel collaborator - knows a thing or two about luxurious baths. For clients around the world, he creates dazzling interiors that sit squarely at the intersection of fabulous and functional.
We asked him to share his thoughts on taking a bath from so-so to sensational:
Master bathrooms have become both showpieces and pampering sanctuaries, a place where clients are often willing to splurge. Why do you think this space has become so important?
With the constantly on the go pace of life today, the private time in one’s bathroom is a true sanctuary, a place to breathe a little easier and enjoy some quiet.
What are your 5 must-haves for a luxury master bathroom?
-
A super shower head with extra water pressure
-
Thick and lofty, luxurious, fresh towels
-
Beautiful taps, fittings and accessories
-
Dimmers to control the lighting
-
A single perfect blossom or a whole bunch in a beautiful vase
What stays out on the countertop and what must be put away? Do you have a display or organizational go-to?
On the counter, the perfect tissue box, soap dish, and cup are essential. I also like a second cup or container to hold my toothbrush and toothpaste, although some clients prefer them away. I also enjoy a vase, and for myself I have a gorgeous small silver shell that holds my before sleep pill. Everything else should be stowed in the medicine cabinet or a drawer.
Powder rooms can make an outsized impression on guests. They also give guests a rare opportunity to notice details without being observed. Does that affect your design choices for powder rooms?
Powder rooms are definitely the place to make a real WOW statement. I love to design them to relate to the palette of the adjoining rooms, but with a twist. For example, in a recent project, aqua was an accent color in the light filled living room, but in the powder room we went dark, moody, sparkling and used a beautifully figured turquoise marble on the floor and vanity.
What’s the best way to create ambiance in a bathroom?
Color and material choices are the two strongest tools for creating ambience in a bath. Nothing says glamour more than marble, metal and lacquer. When it comes to color, a crisp white bath creates one type of atmosphere, while shades of coral, sky blue or lavender a very different aura.
